The Wulin is dying, and Soul is already dead — he just has 66 days to find out why. Phantom Blade Zero’s story is a revenge frame-up wrapped around a slower horror: a martial world hollowing itself out with artificial Sha-Chi in the name of strength. What follows separates what the game states outright from what guides infer, and it spoils everything.
The cast, in one table
| Character | Role |
|---|---|
| Soul | The Order’s most feared blade; adopted son of Mu Tianmiao. Framed for his father’s murder, killed by Zuo Shang, revived by the Flesh Sculptor with 66 days. |
| Zuo Shang | Soul’s childhood sworn brother; now Shadow Sovereign. Golden sword aura; wants the Blight in hand. True final boss. |
| Mu Tianmiao | Founder and old Shadow Sovereign; grew the Order from three people into a Wulin-wide force. Murdered, with the killing laid on Soul. |
| Mu Xiaokui | Mu Tianmiao’s daughter, the Order’s Young Mistress, Soul’s childhood friend. Guards Jade Dancer and Iron Fiend; the five ribbons are their memories. |
| Inanis | Shadow Edict, master of Phantom Arts, keeper of the Gilded Lotus. Body destroyed fighting the Eleven; exists as a projection; created the Realm of Mirage; condenses Memory Flowers. |
| The Chord | Inanis’ dying daughter, moved into a puppet vessel via the Soul Displacement Scroll. Pipa master; her memories are being eaten. |
| Meng Hua | Former Empress of the Eleven; the Lady of the Veil, the Merciful Lady of the Blossom Veil. Dissolved into the Discordance, fused with the Blight, now walks in a puppet vessel. |
| Leng Tu | Herald of the Veil, Thread-Binding Sect master, puppet-maker. Runs the Heart of the Lake ritual and Crimson Manor; built Meng Hua’s vessel. |
| Mó Yuan | Leader of the Bastion of Mó. Community guides identify him with the Gold-Masked One of the five Long Pillar trials. |
Factions and the shape of the world
The Wulin is the martial world of schools, guardians and codes, standing outside the court. Above and beneath it sits the Discordance: a hidden layer beside the Waking Realm where time and space differ, dead consciousness lingers, and memories crystallize.
- The Order — neither good nor evil; it enforces the “Rules” it recognizes. Founded by Mu Tianmiao, now led by Zuo Shang. Officers are Shadow Edicts and Envoys; operatives are Shadow Wardens.
- Shadow Wardens — controlled by a Mindseal, a hypnotic directive rather than absolute control. A Primal Stone can break it.
- The Mandate — a corrupt sect alliance; the Nine Elders sit above the Pillars of Kunlun, and the Encampment is its military backbone.
- Allied Justice — at war with the Masks. Huangxing orders every member to Perfect Transcension; refusal is treason. “It takes away your heart, leaving only a husk.”
- The Baishan Sect — a frontier women’s sword school. After Dugu Linghe’s disaster, Bi Taotao took over and accepted Perfect Transcension; the sect’s faces hollow out.
- The Tianxuan Sect — Daoist sword sect under Bi Yuan, with Bi Di as junior; its relic is the Tianxuan Bronze Sword.
- The Bastion of Mó — Mó Yuan’s stronghold, opposed to the Order; broken decades ago via the Lóng Clan.
- The Seven Stars — seven swordsmen led by Alkaid, now “dark and hollow,” who underwent Perfect Transcension to avenge Red.
- The Masks / Maskwalkers — Transcended troops; without masks, wild Sha-Chi kills them.
- Cult of the Lady of the Veil — worship of Meng Hua as the merciful Lady in dreams; the human face of the Blight’s return.
Transcension, Memory Flowers, and the Blight
Transcension is a Sha-Chi-generating implant plus limb modification. Artificial Sha-Chi floods the body, erodes the will, and turns the user into a killing machine. Perfect Transcension is the refined Primal Stone version — faster and stronger, but still hollowing. The Radiant Heart, a Discordant-Shard-powered heart, can remove the madness without losing the power.
Memory Flowers are memories crystallized where Sha-Chi is thick; Inanis can condense them. Listening raises max HP and reveals buried history — the Inanis and Chord tragedy, Baishan’s hollowing, the Mandate’s betrayal, the villagers of Lu. For the collection side, see Memory Flowers and the collectibles checklist.
The Lady of the Veil is the English title for Meng Hua, one of the Eleven who survived Soulrend Cliff and the strange bell. She fought Inanis, dissolved into the Discordance, and fused with the Blight, a star-born devouring force. Her cult offers comfort to the desperate; her goal is return.
Inanis’ Dreamscape is the official store-copy name for a dream-realm attributed to Inanis. In-game this is the Realm of Mirage, made between the Waking Realm and the Discordance. The equation is strongly implied rather than stated in one line. It is where Soul receives the Violet Blossom, the true-ending flag.
The story in four acts
Act I — the frame-up. Soul is set up for Mu Tianmiao’s murder; Zuo Shang strikes him through the heart. The Flesh Sculptor revives him with a tainted heart and 66 days. Zuo Shang takes the Order and hunts him.
Act II — the Wulin’s rot. Maskwalkers rampage, the Mandate is corrupt, and Allied Justice forces Perfect Transcension on its own disciples. Soul’s cure-hunt becomes a tour of the Wulin’s failure: Baishan hollowed, the Pillars of Kunlun broken, Lu turned into a puppet farm.
Act III — the Herald’s ritual. Leng Tu builds a vessel for Meng Hua and runs the Heart of the Lake ritual to bring her back. The Thread-Binding Sect, the Acolytes, Crimson Manor and Phantom Illusionist Ruins are all parts of that machine. Firefly and Dusk tried to destroy it from inside; Yu’er is used as a puppet body; Bai Chilian serves the Lady through the Herald’s voice.
Act IV — Mirage Estate and Mount Soulrend. Soul reaches the Herald’s perfect-vessel workshop, then Mount Soulrend. Leng Tu and Meng Hua fall. What follows depends on whether Soul has claimed his history (Violet Blossom) and mastered the Long Pillars (Bastion of Mó).
The four endings and what triggers them
PowerPyx’s launch guide describes only two endings (“Normal” and “True”); KeenGamer and wikily document four; S-GAME pre-launch claimed eight. The four-outcome model is the most detailed, so treat the count as medium-high confidence. The clean model is two flags: A = Violet Blossom (all ten pre-Mirage purple Mysteries done, then talk to Inanis in the Realm of Mirage at the end of The Lake) and B = Bloodline Awakening (all five Lóng Pillars, awarding the Bastion of Mó Mask).
| Ending | Trigger | Outcome | Reward |
|---|---|---|---|
| Final Battle (true) | A + B | Zuo Shang appears after Leng Tu and Meng Hua, leads Soul into the Fallen Dream, duels in two forms; Soul wins and leaves with a new heart | With Heart and Blood; Aureate; Broken Long Body; Radiant Heart; Legacy outfit |
| Long’s Roar | A only | Zuo Shang kills Meng Hua; the duel is unwinnable; Soul is banished to die on Mount Soulrend | All Dreams Must End; Blizzard outfit |
| Annihilation | A missing | Meng Hua revives, mocks Soul, destroys the Wulin | All Dreams Must End; no unique trophy |
| Undying Grudge | 66 Days counter reaches 0 | Zuo Shang pours wine on Soul’s grave and mourns his brother | None; the run ends permanently |
The standard final boss is Meng Hua, the Merciful Lady of the Blossom Veil; Zuo Shang is the true final boss with two forms; Leng Tu is penultimate.
True-ending checklist
- Finish the ten purple Mysteries before the Green Serpent House door: Deep in the Valley, Illusion of Inanis, Sha-Chi Powered Boat, Allure of Vanity, Illusory Pipa, Pillars of Kunlun, Whence the Weeping, The Herald’s Illusion, Crimson Manor, Secrets at the Heart of the Lake.
- In Secrets: collect all four Acolyte Masks and both Crystal Eyes, clear Phantom Illusionist Ruins, socket the eyes, destroy the ritual.
- Clear four Lóng Pillars before the door; the fifth is inside Mirage Estate. All five complete Bloodline Awakening.
- Defeat Zhu Yuan (Pangzhen tower bottom) and Bi Feng (Cavern Passage) — community checklists include both, but strict flag status is unconfirmed.
- Complete all 16 Quick Hand’s Requests; the last three are in Mirage. Again, a community checklist rather than a confirmed flag.
- Before The Last Chance, talk to Inanis and complete her checklist to hear “Follow your own heart!” Otherwise she warns you.
- Beat Leng Tu, then Meng Hua, then Zuo Shang. The second Zuo Shang form is true-route only.
Points of no return: the Green Serpent House door is the first hard gate and warns you; The Last Chance bell on Mount Soulrend is the final gate and warns even on a perfect run. Regions reopen after the credits. One wiki places the lock at the start of the Leng Tu fight instead. Soft gates are Jing Ye, Bai Chilian, Mu Xiaokui, and the Pangzhen transition.
What the endings actually mean
Annihilation is the default failure: Soul never claimed his own history, so he has no standing to stop the ritual’s purpose. Meng Hua returns and the Wulin ends.
Long’s Roar is the tragedy of half-knowledge. Soul knows himself but has not mastered the Lóng inheritance, so Zuo Shang kills Meng Hua for him — and the brothers’ duel cannot be won. Soul is exiled to die on Mount Soulrend.
Final Battle is the only ending where Soul leaves with a new heart. He has both his history and his bloodline, so he can meet Zuo Shang in the Fallen Dream and win.
Undying Grudge is not a story ending so much as a clock running out. The 66 Days counter is a second cycle with a separate save, no manual saving, autosave at bells, and one day lost per death. No trophy requires it.
Sources & confidence
The main sources are PowerPyx’s launch guide, KeenGamer, wikily, GameSpot, GameRant, the PBZ Wiki, and community quest-data reads, cross-checked against the research report. Confidence is high on the four-act structure, the character roles, Transcension, Memory Flowers, and the two-flag ending model; the biggest uncertainty is the ending count itself, where sources range from two to eight, and the strict flag status of the Zhu Yuan, Bi Feng, and Quick Hand checklist steps.
